Mareil-Marly

Mareil-Marly : a Celtic village at the doors of Paris.

Mareil : an authentic pre-Latino Celtic word “maroilios” meaning the “large clearing” and Marly indicating the ownership of the site to the barony of Marly-Chastel under Louis XIV.

Thanks to its richness and to the nature of its soil, Mareil-Marly’s slope was preordained to the culture of vineyards. By the end of the Roman Empire, Mareil was the supplier of Normandie, Picardie and Paris. During the Revolution, Mareil-Marly’s coat of arms represented a grapevine: demonstrating the importance of the village’s vines.

Mareil-Marly : an exceptional site for artists and nature lovers.

Remarkable by its picturesque location the town is nestled by both the state-owned forests of Saint-Germain-en-laye and Marly. This birthplace of impressionists is built on a hill overlooking a valley. Where you will be happy to discover the little village of Démonval and the Grandchamps Castle.

Mareil-Marly : a rich heritage to family spirit.

This little village can be seen as the “Madeleine” of Proust which brings back your childhood memories. It possesses a magnificent architectural heritage and conceals imposing structures which makes its reputation. The 13th century St’Etienne’s church for example is classified as a historic monument and a real manifest of Gothic Art. The Marivaux’s washer is a witness of the village’s history- built in 1885 and abandoned before the 2nd World War; it is currently part of a restoration plan.

The railway station was an inspiration to great filmmakers: Losseliani ; Philippe Le Gay or Diane Kurys with the movie “coup de foudre”.
